You want a job in hospitality, but first you need to know what attributes will help you to gain this position, and some tips on what to do if you get this job. Here, we give you 5 important tips on working in the hospitality business within hotels. They are all important no matter which hotel you work in and where. Whether it is a huge, bustling city or accommodation in Inverell, big or small, each place requires the same level of attention and skill.
Customer Service with a Smile
The first thing to remember is that a smile comes for free. Also, customer service is free. A huge part of your job is to make guests feel welcome and comfortable so a smile and a friendly manner will go a long way. Be polite, be patient and be friendly and your guests will remember their stay with you fondly.
Discretion is Key
Not everyone who uses a hotel is on an innocent holiday that friends and family are aware of. People use hotels for all sorts of reasons and it is up to the staff to maintain an air of discretion around their guests stay. It could even be dangerous for some people if others find out where they are staying, such as the victims of domestic violence. Or on the other end of the scale, if a famous person checks in it is never ok for a hotel employee to boast about this person to their friends, or over social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
Sometimes, a hotel employee will be asked to organise things for the guests that would usually raise an eyebrow. But while you are behind that counter and in the hotel uniform, you cannot judge or smirk, just carry out your job with professionalism.
Good Communication Skills
Good communication skills will go a long way in any field, but it is especially important in the hotel business. You will be dealing with people from near and far, some of these people won’t have English as a first language and in fact, may not be able to speak English at all. You will also be faced with guests from different cultures and customs so it is a good idea to have an understanding of as many cultures as you can so you can communicate better.
As most workers in a hotel are shift-workers, internal communication is of utmost importance. When a shift ends and a new one begins, there needs to be a thorough handover so things are not forgotten.
Personal Grooming
While you are working in a hotel, you are the face of that hotel. This isn’t just for the desk staff but also goes for anyone working in the bars, the restaurants or even behind the scenes in the back office. Because of this, it is extremely important to be well groomed. Nails should be clean and filed, uniforms should be ironed and should fit well and hair should be neatly done and pulled back from the face. It is also important that you don’t smell like old cigarette smoke, so avoid smoking in uniform if possible.
Women should wear basic cosmetics, but not be painted as though they are heading out for the evening. And men should shave daily.
Enjoy People
A job in hospitality means a job working with people. This means it is only going to be enjoyable if you actually like being around people. You not only have your guests to look after, but you will be working in a team as well. A good memory helps when dealing with guests, if you can remember their names and room numbers this will make a lasting impression on them. This goes even more so for regular returning guests.
